HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP, TALENT, AND STRATEGY

Robyn Hannigan

I’ve spent my career building and leading academic, research, and institutional systems as a college president, provost, founding dean, scientist, board leader, and startup founder. Today, my work sits at the intersection of higher education leadership, institutional strategy, governance, talent, research, innovation, and public impact.

I do my best work close to the substance of a problem: understanding the data, reading the context, asking better questions, and helping leaders make decisions that move institutions forward.

What I Work On

Institutions are strengthened when mission, resources, leadership, governance, and execution are aligned. I work on the questions underneath institutional performance: what an institution is trying to become, what is getting in the way, how decisions are made, and what leadership capacity is needed to move from aspiration to action. My experience includes academic and research strategy, financial and operational restructuring, board and shared governance work, external partnerships, philanthropic and public engagement, and organizational change, always with a focus on helping institutions see their choices clearly, make better decisions, and build durable momentum.

Institutions are shaped by the leaders they choose, develop, support, and retain. I work on questions of leadership capacity, role design, succession, candidate fit, team dynamics, and the conditions that allow talented people to do meaningful work. Through Summit Search Solutions, this includes leadership search, sourcing, and candidate cultivation for higher education and mission-driven organizations, with particular attention to roles where institutional context, trust, and fit matter. This work also extends to onboarding support and coaching that help leaders translate appointment into early momentum and durable success.

Student success depends on the connections among education, experience, support, and long-term outcomes. I work on those connections as systems: curriculum, advising, experiential learning, research, employer partnerships, career pathways, and community needs. My experience includes shaping institution-wide experiential learning models with faculty, integrating applied learning across the curriculum, aligning advising and student support with academic programs, and building partnerships that help students connect what they are learning to meaningful work, civic contribution, and public value.

Research matters most when it creates knowledge and moves that knowledge into use. I have helped grow research activity, external funding, interdisciplinary programs, and partnerships across science, engineering, health, environment, and applied research. My work has connected universities and non-profits with industry, health systems, federal agencies, and community partners, translating research into startups, clinical applications, workforce development, student opportunity, applied technologies, and broader public value.

Scholarship, Innovation, & Applied Work

Across my work, I try to connect ideas with institutions, evidence with decisions, and discovery with public value.
